It’s 3:30 in the afternoon, 19º with a wind chill that makes it feel like 6º, and at some point during the night the world froze solid. We’ve been glazed. Coated. Frosted.

Does anyone remember Doctor Zhivago? Well, today’s a page out of that book.

The weather geniuses had been predicting a snowfall of 1 to 3 inches of snow, so when I woke up this morning that’s what I expected to find. Snow. Stoopid, stoopid snow. But, no, there was no snow. Instead the world was encased in about an eighth of an inch of ice.

This was not a welcome surprise.

Simply defrosting my windshield required an ice scraper, a stiff brush, half a can of windshield de-icer, a defroster on high, and forty minutes. Just as challenging was getting the car door open, a task which required two people and ten minutes.

The worst part of all? This, my friends, is the heat of the day. It’ll only get colder from here. Tonight the temperature is supposed to drop to 12º, with winds of 15 mph. Needless to say, I won’t be leaving the house until May.

Please, send soup.
